Before choosing a tutoring program, it helps to understand where a student is comfortable and where they need support. A pre-course assessment gives families and educators a starting point for that conversation. CCYC uses an initial assessment to help identify a student's academic level and challenges, then discusses a learning plan with the family.
What should parents bring to the conversation?
Start with your child's grade and the subject they want to work on. Share recent assignments or test feedback if they help explain a particular challenge. It is also useful to describe what the student finds easy, what feels frustrating, and what they hope to improve. A clear goal, such as feeling more confident with fractions or planning a study routine, is more useful than a general request to “get better grades.”
Tell the centre about your preferred learning format, schedule, and location. CCYC describes both online and in-person tutoring options. Families in Markham and Richmond Hill can ask which programs and times are currently available at each location.
What happens after the assessment?
The next step is to discuss what the assessment showed and which program may fit the student's needs. Ask how lessons will address the main challenges, how progress will be discussed with the family, and when the plan should be reviewed. If you are comparing one-to-one and small-group support, ask how each format would work for your child.
An assessment is a starting point, not a prediction of a particular grade or exam result. The most useful plan is one that can be adjusted as the student gains confidence and the work at school changes.
